Adomnán, Iona, and the Life of St. Columba: Their Place Among Continental Saints by Jeffrey Wetherill, Eastern Oregon University & University of Wales, Lampeter Abstract: If we are to believe Adomnán, ninth abbot of Iona and author of the Life of St. Columba, the reputation of the Saint reached beyond Ireland and Britain to "Spain and Gaul and Italy beyond the Alps, and even Rome itself, the chief of all cities." Is this literary embellishment or historical realism? This paper will explore the ways in which Adomnán connects Columba with the continent and how those connections are intimately linkied with his purpose(s) for writing the Life. Saint Gildas and the Pestilent Dragon: A Meander through the Sixth-Century Landscape With a Most Notable Guru by W. Julian Edens, Wright City, Missouri Abstract: The historical value of the pilgrimage episode in the Life of Gildas by the Monk of Ruys is defended by advancing solutions to the problems of composition-dating, integrity of tradition, motivation, and the appearance of a dragon. An approach is taken to delimiting the date of the pilgrimage in light of the Yellow Death pandemic and the geopolitics of the contemporary Mediterranean world.   Kentigern and Gonothigernus: A Scottish Saint and a Gaulish Bishop Identified by Henry Gough-Cooper, Independent Scholar Abstract: Onomastic, documentary and archaeological evidence is examined to test the proposed identification of St Kentigern of Glasgow with Gonothigernus, bishop of Senlis c.549x573. The Otherworldy Yet Real-Time Exploits of Gregory the Great By Brad Eden, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Abstract: This article examines the idea of the otherworldly in medievalexperience from the perspective of Gregory the Great's mission to the English. The paper reviews the history of travel literature in the medieval world, how Britain's remoteness and no known history placed it into the realm of the otherworldly, St. Augustine of Canterbury's fears regarding leaving his known world and traveling into the unknown, and some comparisons of both Gregory's and Augustine's viewpoints regarding the otherworldly. In the end, the mission to the English quickly brought Britain out of the otherworldly realm and into the realm of the known in early medieval history.   The Ripon Connection? Willibrord, Wilfrid, and the Mission to Frisia By Michelle Ziegler, Belleville, IL. Abstract: This essay challenges the view that Wilfrid of York inspired, sent or supported Willibrord's mission to Frisia. The evidence of Wilfrid's evangelization of Frisia and Willibrord's life from his youth at Ripon through his consecration as Archbishop of Frisia is reviewed. An Appeal to Rome: Anglo-Saxon Dispute Settlement, 800-810 By Deanna Forsman, University of California, Los Angeles Abstract: In this paper, I argue that Anglo-Saxon dispute settlement in the early ninth century exploited Charlemagne's title as Holy Roman Emperor. The willingness of Anglo-Saxon monarchs to evoke a Continental presence in dispute resolution demonstrates the connection between England and Charlemagne's renovatio imperii.   Personal Equipment and Fighting Techniques Among the Anglo-Saxon Population in Northern Europe During the Early Middle Ages by Paolo de Vingo, University of Torino, Italy Abstract: The Anglo-Saxon military equipment included a sword or axe, a lance and a buckler, whereas most men would wear a dagger hanging from their belt. Despite the poor amount of evidence available, most Anglo-Saxon warriors seemed to wear helmets.
